SwingKultur Festival - The Bands and the DJs

For each of the nights, we have invited magnificent Swing Bands and wonderful DJs to move your feet.

Friday Night: The Nine Pennies (Italy)

The Nine Pennies have been created by Roberto Resaz in Genoa (Italy) in 1998. The band lines up 10 musicians: Massimo Rapetti (Trumpet), Denis Trapasso (Trombone), Roberto Trabona (Altosax), Paolo Maffi (Tenorsax), Antonio Maffezzoni (Baritone Sax), Luca Lamari (Piano), Marco Parodi (Guitar), Roberto Resaz (Bass, Leader), Luca Rigazio (Drums), Erika Celesti (Vocalist).
The Band repertoire is mainly inspired by the music of the late 20s and early 30s New York Bands, and the original arrangements, written by the great Jazzman and Bandleader Red Pellini and Roberto Resaz himself, build an ideal bridge between Classic Jazz style and Swing Music. The Nine Pennies music is exactly what dancers look for, perfect for LindyHop, Shag, Balboa and Jazz. This band has played at numerous Swing festival as the RockThatSwing-Festival, the Balboa-and-Shag-Weekend in Munich, at Swing-Crash in Como or at the Lubiana-Swing-Sweet-Festival in Slovenia. Here you can find a nice video of the band.

Saturday Night: Gentlemen & Gangsters (Gothenburg)

Gentlemen & Gangsters play hot jazz with all the flair and sophistication of true gentlemen, coupled with the ruthless brutality of hardened gangsters. Like a devious conspiracy from a bygone era, this shady syndicate of jazz kingpins plot for world domination from their secret location in a run down part of Gothenburg. Armed with drumsticks instead of knuckle dusters and trombones instead of tommy guns these deranged masterminds spread mayhem, joy, and decadence wherever they go.

You might have heard about them, you might even recognize some of the members from their more legitimate enterprises, and maybe you thought it was all just a rumor; after all – could such a band really exist? How could society allow it? How could they possibly have escaped the vice squad? Or even disease control, given the infectious jazz music that they are spreading? Well folks, all you need is a speedy getaway vehicle and a secret lair and the contraband jazz business is as easy as pie!

“The Gentlemen & Gangsters play traditional New Orleans hot jazz with a touch of swing. Focusing on authenticity in content and delivery, as well as a solid, driving rhythm, the group strive to play music that moves you and that stays true to the style of jazz giants such as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Muggsy Spanier, Sidney Bechet, Duke Ellington, etc. Playing mainly for the lindy hop community, they perform all over Europe on a regular basis and dancers from all over the world have praised them for their energy, presence, and sensitivity to what matters to a dancing audience. The Gentlemen & Gangsters play jazz music as it was meant to be played: with the flair and sophistication of true gentlemen, yet with the grittiness and brute force of hardened gangsters.”

Saturday Night: Shirt Tail Stompers (London)

On Saturday Night, we also invited an amazing band from England, the Shirt Tail Stompers. One of London's top vintage jazz bands, The Shirt Tail Stompers have quickly made a name for themselves at home and internationally. Truly appreciating the art of swing and knowing it's place in history, they are heavily influenced by Fats Waller, Fletcher Henderson, Wingy Manone and many other greats from the swing and trad jazz era of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. They also play a mean blues show, influenced by the likes of the early Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet and the old musicical roots of New Orleans.

Last year alone saw them playing festivals and shows in Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Italy and throughout the UK to rave reviews. Highlights at home have included The Royal Albert Hall, Vintage Festival by Hemmingway and London's many vintage and dance nights. Dancers and lindy hop are very close to their hearts and the band have relished making people's feet move all over the world.

Sunday Night: Laney and the Snappy Rhythm Gang (Stuttgart)

The lovely singer "Laney" and her winsome gang of magnificent jazz musicians are dedicated to swing music and take you on a journey to the 30s and 40s of the golden swing era. They will keep your feet moving with exquisite arrangements of jazz standards and popular pieces of the swing dance scene, with a vibrant and diverse sound! We are very happy that they will play for us after having already played at famous events such as the RockThatSwing-Festival in Munich, The BB-Dance-Camp in Landsberg or the Is-There-Hop in Zürich. Get more information here and on facebook.

When the musicians have to get at drink at the bar, we have a line up of DJs at the parties ready to keep you dancing!
